What is the .AI file type?
The .ai extension is associated with files in the Adobe Illustrator (AI) format. The AI format is a proprietary format developed and introduced by Adobe, Inc. to handle vector graphics.
An .ai file is a single-page vector graphics file based upon the PGF (Portable Graphics Format) vector graphics description language. AI files are basically either Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) or PDF (Portable Document Format) files, including a full PGF copy of the file's contents (a dual-format approach).
AI files are created by the commercial Adobe Illustrator, a vector graphics processing software product. Variable degrees of support for .ai files are offered on part of vector and raster image processing software on all desktop platforms. Besides, .ai files can be imported in some office suites.
Current-version AI files are saved with the PDF internal structure, so they can be opened for viewing purposes with any PDF reader (changing the extension to .pdf if necessary).
The default association for .ai files is Adobe Illustrator (if installed).
