What is the .AIFF file type?
The .aiff filename extension stands for the Audio Interchange File Format (AIFF) and represents the AIFF Audio File (.aif, .aiff) file type. Developed by Apple Computer back in 1988, AIFF is a lossless digital audio format that uses the PCM (Pulse-Code Modulation) encoding of sound.
The .aiff file is an AIFF audio. It is a large binary file that stores uncompressed 8-bit, 16-bit, or 32-bit PCM sound data arranged in chunks with no quality loss. AIFF files tend to occupy tens of times more disk space that their MP3 or other lossy-compressed counterparts. Like WAV, AIFF has become one of the standard formats in professional music-making and audio processing.
On Microsoft Windows systems, AIFF files are often denoted with the .aif extension, a legacy 8.3 version of .aiff. A more space-efficient compressed version of AIFF is referred to as AIFF-C, and such files usually receive the .aifc extension, instead of the standard .aiff or .aif.
The AIFF format is well documented and supported in a number of multimedia players, audio editors, and digital audio workstations (DAW's). Some, like iTunes or VLC, allow to convert AIFF files to other audio formats.
