AMC File Extension

Have a problem opening a .AMC file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what AMC files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .AMC file type?

The primary association of the .amc extension belongs to the Adaptive Modulation and Coding (AMC) file format and the respective file type (.amc). AMC broadly relates to a series of techniques used in cellular networks to adapt the data transmission rate to the actual radio link conditions. Such techniques typically include changing modulation type (QPSK or QAM), increasing redundancy, increasing the number of repeat requests, etc.

AMC is also a designation of a 3GPP-like adaptive multimedia format used to exchange multimedia data between cellular devices (phones). The AMC format allows to negotiate the transmission speed, adapting it to the actual link state. An .amc file is a digital multimedia (audio and video) file created on, or received from a legacy mobile phone. Standalone AMC files can be played by several major multimedia players (e.g., Apple Quicktime).

Alternatively, the .amc extension also serves to distinguish A4Tech mouse macros. A4Tech is a well-known Taiwanese producer of computer peripheral devices, including mouse manipulators, keyboards, joysticks, game controllers, etc. Certain advanced A4Tech game mouse devices (e.g., A4Tech F4 V-Track, X7) allow to create and use text-based macros (.amc) that are simply timed sequences of mouse-controlled actions.

Such macros are designed for action computer games, giving the advantage of faster or more accurate shooting, recoil suppression, etc. Besides the Oscar Editor tool provided by A4Tech, AMC macro files can be created and edited with any text editor. In many gaming communities, the use of .amc macros is considered equivalent to cheating.

Apart from that, the .amc extension belongs to the Acclaim Motion Capture (AMC) file format/type, part of the dual Acclaim ASF/AMC motion capture format. In ASF/AMC, the .asf file is used to store the hierarchical representation of the skeleton structure and composition, while one or more .amc files contain actual movements data. ASF/AMC is a bone-oriented skeletal motion capture format, and .asf (.amc) files are understood and can be exported/imported to/from many major motion capture applications.

Lastly, the .amc extension is also associated with the Ant Movie Catalog File (AMC) file format/type. Ant Movie Catalog (AMC) is a FOSS (Free and Open-Source Software) movie organizer application for MS Windows by Antoine Pottent. The AMC organizer uses .amc files to store movie catalog data (incl. cover art, screenshots, actor pictures, etc.) in its own binary database format, of which there are two sub-versions (AMC_3.5 and AMC_4.1).
