APL File Extension

Have a problem opening a .APL file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what APL files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .APL file type?

The filename extension .apl primarily represents the Adobe Plug-in (.apl) file type associated with commercial image manipulation software products by Adobe Systems Inc. such as Adobe PhotoShop or Adobe Illustrator. Adobe products share the same plug-in support functionality, thanks to which external plug-in modules can be used. An .apl file is an Adobe application plug-in. It contains the binary code of an external feature or module. For instance, Adobe Photoshop plug-ins (.8bi, .apl, .plugin) are normally located in the Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop ...\Plug-ins folder, while the Adobe Dialog Manager (ADM) plug-in (ADMPlugin.apl) is part of the required plug-in set for several Adobe applications. The .apl file type gets automatically associated with the Adobe application supporting the APL plug-in format that was most recently installed on the system.

Alternatively, the .apl extension designates the Monkey’s Audio Track List (.apl) file type, also referred to as the APE Link File (.apl). Monkey's Audio (APE) is the name of a lossless audio codec with a high compression ratio. When using Monkey's Audio, multiple soundtracks are usually saved as a single .ape file, with the .apl file providing the metadata (track list, soundtrack position and duration details, etc.). Any APL file makes sense only in combination with the APE audio file associated with it. APE (.ape, .apl) files can be opened by any multimedia player supporting Monkey's Audio.

Another file type denoted by the .apl extension is known as ArcPad Layer (.apl). ArcPad layer (.apl) files are created and used by Esri's ArcPad field data collection and mapping software, closely integrated with the ArcGIS platform. With reference to ArcPad, an .apl file represents an individual map layer in XML format, typically generated from a shapefile.

Apart from the above, the .apl extension also represents the Legacy Radar Contact Flight Plan (.apl) file type associated with the Radar Contact (RC) flight control simulation software by JDT LLC. Here, an .apl file represents a flight plan in a legacy format intended to be used with earlier versions of RC. More recent flight plans use a different format (.pln).
