CHA File Extension

Have a problem opening a .CHA file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what CHA files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .CHA file type?

Most frequently, the .cha extension would be used as an abbreviation of 'Chat' to denote the IRC (Internet Relay Chat) Chat Configuration (CHA) file type. IRC is the oldest Internet-based instant messaging system that uses a concept of channels where one can address and converse with a multiple audience.

A .cha file is a plaintext 'chat' file that contains configuration settings of an IRC channel (server IP-address and name, port, channel name, user credentials etc.). A .cha file is used to tell an IRC client how to connect to a particular channel. IRC clients use .cha files as channel shortcuts. URL (Uniform Resource Locator) links to IRC .cha (also .chat) files are properly processed by most modern web browsers by re-directing to an IRC client.

An abbreviation of 'Channel,' the .cha extension is also used in Adobe Photoshop (PS), being associated with the Color Channel Mixer Preset (CHA) file type. PS is a powerful commercial raster image processor, a de facto standard in professional full-color imaging. PS uses binary .cha presets to store custom color mixer settings that can be later applied by loading a specific .cha file.

In video gaming, the .cha extension is bound up with the binary Diablo Character (CHA) file type and format in relation to Diablo, a cult single- and multiplayer RPG (Role-Playing Game) by Blizzard. A .cha file stores a complete game character profile with name, class, level, skills and achievements gained as well as items collected. Various 'trainer' utilities allow to manipulate data in .cha files, but it is considered cheating.

In font design, the .cha extension represents the URW++ Character Layout (CHA) file type and format used by DTL OTMaster and DTL FontMaster, professional OpenType/TrueType/Type 1 font production tools by DTL. A .cha file is a plaintext character layout file that defines the order in which characters appear in a font and serves as a font map. OTMaster and FontMaster use slightly different versions of the CHA file format.

In linguistics, the .cha extension is used by CLAN (Computerized Language Analysis), a linguistic software (Windows/Mac OS) for language pattern analysis, to denote the CLAN Transcript (CHA) file type. CLAN .cha files are plaintext conversation transcripts in the Child Language Data Exchange System (CHILDES) format.
