What is the .CONFIG file type?
The .config extension is used, as the name implies, to denote various configuration files across different platforms. Normally, a configuration file is a plaintext, human-readable and comprehensibly structured file that defines software configuration defaults.
Files with the .config extension are most frequently used in the Microsoft (MS) .NET Framework software-development and runtime environment. In the .NET environment, .config files store machine-wide, user- and application-specific configurable data in an XML-based format.
CONFIG files are also used as configuration files in MS Visual Studio software and website development projects. Another occurrence of the .config extension would be in configuration files used during kernel compilation in GNU/Linux.
Since CONFIG files are plaintext, they can be edited with any text editor, however, an erratic change can and will cause the respective application to fail. Before editing, a backup of the original .config file would always be a wise thing to do.
