CR2 File Extension

Have a problem opening a .CR2 file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what CR2 files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .CR2 file type?

The .cr2 filename extension is bound up with the proprietary Canon Raw, Version 2 (CR2) raster graphical image format and file type. CR2 is used to store originally taken photos in a camera's memory in a compressed but otherwise unprocessed state. The CR2 format uses TIFF-like lossless compression.

As the format name implies, a CR2 file is a raw image data as it was given by the camera's sensor. Unlike JPEG, CR2 files generally require a lot of processing before they can be even viewed. Raw .cr2 photo files are generally much larger then their .jpeg counterparts. However, the use of this format provides maximum quality and post-processing room in professional photography.

CR2 images can be fully processed with the use of Canon's proprietary camera software. For viewing purposes, CR2 images can be opened with many available photo viewers. Several raster image processing suites allow import of .cr2 photos for in-depth editing. Also, several independent CR2 converters are available.

Alternatively, the .cr2 extension can be associated with Character files (CR2) used by Poser, an advanced 3D character modeling and animation suite developed by SmithMicro Software, Inc. A CR2 file stores all information specific to a character, including morphs, joints, materials etc.
