DOCM File Extension

Have a problem opening a .DOCM file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what DOCM files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .DOCM file type?

The .docm extension is associated with the Macro-Enabled Microsoft Word Document (DOCM) file type. DOCM belongs to the Office Open XML (OOXML) family of XML-based office formats developed by Microsoft (MS) and internationally standardized by Ecma International. OOXML was introduced with MS Office 2007 and is the standard office format framework for all later MS Office releases.

The DOCM file type is used to denote files that are regular word-processing documents (.docx), but with macros enabled for execution. Macros are in-document programs, or scripts usually written in VBA (Visual Basic for Applications). With normal .docx documents, execution of macros is disabled to minimize security risks.

Like other OOXML file types, a .docm file is a ZIP archive, containing a directory structure that includes embedded objects, macros, and the document's main XML files that describe contents and relationships.

Any .docm file can be opened with MS Word or any other office suite that supports OOXML. Besides, the extension of a .docm file can be changed to .docx to disable macros, while retaining them in the file.
