Opening flac files

Have a problem opening a .flac file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what flac files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .FLAC file type?

FLAC, short for Free Lossless Audio Codec, is a free-to-use audio compression technique commonly used for packing digital audio files in order to get higher data storage capacity and make the downloading process quicker.

Files in the .flac format work similar to MP3 or WMA files, but they maintain a better sound quality - audio is compressed up to half of its size without hurting quality of the music. That's why the .flac format is often referred to as a "lossless format".
