IFO File Extension

Have a problem opening a .IFO file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what IFO files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .IFO file type?

The primary association of the .ifo extension belongs to the Digital Video Disk (DVD) Information File (IFO) format. IFO files are to be found on every single DVD disk released as they are part of the format standard.

All DVD files with the .ifo extension are small files that contain movie menus, and besides, angle, scene order, audio and subtitle language and other playback-related information. IFO files are simply metafiles, and as such they do not contain any actual media data. All actual DVD video tracks are stored as .vob files that are referenced in IFO's.

Although DVD's are usually played back as a whole, DVD playback via IFO files is still widely supported by a variety of software and hardware players. The 'video_ts.ifo' file is in fact the main file on every DVD disk, as it contains the main disk menu. Every disk playback attempt starts with reading that file.

The default association for the .ifo extension on any platform would be with the system's default media player (in Windows, it is most frequently Windows Media Player).

Alternatively, the .ifo extension can be associated with Graphic Object Layer Data files created by ImageForge, a commercial raster graphics processing suite by Cursorart.
