What is the .ISMV file type?
The .ismv filename extension stands for the IIS Smooth Streaming Video (.ismv) file type, with reference to the Smooth Streaming expansion of the Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) server technology. IIS Smooth Streaming audio files receive the .isma extension.
The .ismv file is an MPEG-4 movie specially packaged for streaming. Basically, it is an MPEG-4 container with fragmented and multiplexed payload (H.264 video and HE-AAC/EAC-3 audio tracks) to enable efficient adaptive streaming. On an IIS Smooth Streaming server, there are usually several .ismv files for the same video encoded with different quality. Each client is served the .ismv file that best matches its network speed and CPU capacity.
IIS Smooth Streaming multimedia content (.ismv, isma) can be viewed with any web browser with the Microsoft Silverlight plugin. As a rule, standalone ISMV files cannot be played by offline media players, unless first converted into the 'normal' MPEG-4 format. ISMV/ISMA containers can be created from regular MPEG-4 (.mp4, .mov) files using the IIS Transform manager or the "mp4split" tool (Unified Packager).
