What is the .ITHMB file type?
The .ithmb filename extension serves to distinguish the ITHMB ('iThumbnail') file format and the respective file type. ITHMB is a proprietary raster graphic image format developed by Apple, Inc. for its iOS-based mobile devices (iPod, iPhone and iPad).
An .ithmb file basically contains a series of thumbnails in several pixel dimensions to suit different preview modes and the device's screen size. ITHMB files are typically quite large, taking up a lot of storage, but they are faster and easier processed by the mobile CPU, which helps saving battery charge.
ITHMB thumbnails are created every time a device is synchronized with a computer via iTunes and are saved in both the device and the computer. On a device, all .ithmb files are stored inside the 'Thumbnails' or 'Thumbs' directory. On a computer, such files can be found inside the 'iDevice Photo Cache' folder.
ITHMB's can be considered and used as a backup of all images on an iDevice. In MacOS, images from .ithmb files can be retrieved via many third-party file tools. In Windows, there are several standalone commercial converter tools available for the same purpose.
