What is the .JFIF file type?

The .jfif filename extension stands for the JPEG File Interchange Format (JFIF) and, among several other extensions (.jpeg, .jpg, .jpe), serves to denote JPEG digital bitmap image files. JPEG is an acronym for Joint Photography Experts Group and a designation of a widely popular bitmap image format, also known as JPEG Standard (ISO/IEC 10918-1). JFIF is the standard file format for JPEG images.

JPEG relies on lossy data compression giving good ratios and small file sizes, supports progressive encoding, can embed EXIF metadata, and is best suited for photographic images with millions of colors and smooth color changes. JPEG is currently the most widespread and universally supported bitmap image format, used in digital photography, web graphics, and many other areas.

A .jfif file is a JPEG digital bitmap image. The .jfif extension is equivalent to .jpeg (.jpg) and can be interchanged with those for compatibility. JPEG images (.jpeg, .jpg, .jfif) are supported by a wide range of image viewers, graphics editors, office applications, operating systems, digital cameras, hardware media players, mobile devices, etc.
