M4P File Extension

Have a problem opening a .M4P file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what M4P files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .M4P file type?

The .m4p file extension stands for 'MPEG-4 Audio, Protected' and represents AAC-encoded MPEG-4 audio files protected with the Apple's proprietary Fairplay Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology. M4P files contain DRM-protected music purchased from the iTunes Store. Unprotected MPEG-4 audio files would have the .m4a or .m4b extension.

The M4P format mainly uses the lossy Advanced Audio Codec (AAC) compression that offers better sound quality and generally smaller file sizes than MPEG Layer III (MP3) at the same bitrate.

M4P files are designed to be playable with Apple iTunes, subject to authorization against a user's account. There is a limitation on the number of PC's and portable devices associated with one user account to restrict copying.

Despite the DRM protection, iTunes would allow M4P files to be converted into audio CD's and subsequently converted into the MP3 format from within iTunes itself. M4P files can also be converted into other formats via several freely available converter tools.

In a corporate business environment, the .m4p extension can be also associated with data files used by the SAGE 100 (former MAS 90) enterprise management and accounting software developed by Sage, Inc. These M4P files are data files found on corporate servers and editable directly in a text editor.
