MK3D File Extension

Have a problem opening a .MK3D file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what MK3D files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .MK3D file type?

The .mk3d filename extension belongs to the Matroska 3D/Stereoscopic Video (.mk3d) file type. Matroska is an open and extensible multimedia container format developed by the Matroska.org foundation. Matroska containers are typically used for high quality (HD-like) video files, with several audio and subtitle tracks in different languages. MKV is also well-suited for 3D content.

An .mk3d file is a 3D movie in the MKV format. It is a regular Matroska (MKV) container with its extension deliberately changed to point out to its 3D contents. The .mk3d and .mkv extensions are interchangeable because such files are analyzed by their headers, incl. the StereoMode value.

On a 3D-capable screen, 3D movies in MK3D files can be played by all players that fully support the MKV format. Depending on their stereo mode, some .mk3d movies can also be played in 2D. The MKVToolnix and MKVmerge tools can be used to create and/or modify MK3D files.

Certain Popcorn Hour (Syabas Technology) devices provide support for the stereoscopic MKV format in hardware, allowing to play .mk3d movies directly, also over HDMI.
