MP2 File Extension

Have a problem opening a .MP2 file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what MP2 files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .MP2 file type?

The primary association of the .mp2 filename extension belongs to the MPEG-1 Audio Layer II Audio File (.mp2) file type and format. Stemming from the MUSICAM audio codec, MPEG-1 Layer II is a standard lossy audio compression format (as defined in ISO/IEC 11172-3) that found application in digital broadcasting, on VideoCD disks, and became part of the DVD specification. Although MPEG-1 Layer II has been largely superseded by the super-popular MPEG-1 Layer III (MP3, .mp3) compression format, it is still actively used in digital broadcasting (DVB/DAB).

An .mp2 file is a digital audio-only file in the MPEG-1 Audio Layer II format. Thanks to the wide support of MPEG-1, MP2 files can be played, recorded, converted, or edited with a number of media players and audio manipulation tools on different platforms and OS'es.

The MP2 file type (MPEG-1 Layer II) should not be confused with the MPEG-2 multimedia container format, as MPEG-2 files can accommodate both video and audio tracks and use a different extension (.mpg).

The .mp2 extension also occurs in association with the Heroes of Might and Magic II (HOMM II) Map (.mp2) file type/format. HOMM II is a cult legacy turn-based strategy game by New World Computing (3DO), part of the HOMM series (I through V). With HOMM II, an .mp2 file represents a game map that defines a playable scenario, either standalone or within a campaign. MP2 map files are located in the "maps" subfolder of the game's installation directory.
