OMA File Extension

Have a problem opening a .OMA file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what OMA files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .OMA file type?

The .oma filename extension represents the Sony OpenMG/ATRAC3 Audio (.oma, .omg) file format and type. A Digital Rights Management (DRM) system by Sony, OpenMG is used in particular for wrapping audio content encoded with one of Sony's proprietary ATRAC (Adaptive Transform Acoustic Coding) lossy audio codecs, usually ATRAC3 or ATRAC3plus. DRM-free ATRAC3 audio files may have other extensions (.aa3, .at3).

An .oma (.omg) file is an ATRAC3/ATRAC3plus audio track inside an OpenMG DRM container. Such .oma (.omg) files are directly playable on Sony portable devices, and the official software to handle the OpenMG/ATRAC3 format and transfer music files to/from Sony portable devices is Sony SonicStage. OMA (OMG) files with active DRM protection are encrypted and cannot be freely copied or directly converted to another format.

DRM-free .oma (.omg) files can be opened and played in several all-purpose multimedia players as well as converted into other formats (e.g., using Sony's free MP3 Conversion Tool). Another way of converting .oma files into other audio formats involves burning an ATRAC Audio CD via SonicStage and ripping it into the desired format.
