R23 File Extension

Have a problem opening a .R23 file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what R23 files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .R23 file type?

Extensions like .r23 are used in the context of the RAR/WinRAR Split Archive Volume (.r00.r99) file type. RAR refers both to a proprietary data compression algorithm and its implementation (a CLI tool) by E.Roshal, while its Microsoft Windows version WinRAR is an advanced multi-format archive management tool. Both RAR and WinRAR support creation of split, or multi-volume archives.

Following the 'old-style' naming pattern, each volume of a split RAR/WinRAR archive is assigned an indexed extension from .r00 to .r99 to denote its order in the general sequence. Thus, the .r23 file is the twenty-fifth volume of an 'old-style' split RAR/WinRAR archive, as the first volume always receives the .rar (or .exe) extension. The 'new' pattern adopted in recent WinRAR versions defaults to the standard .rar extension, while denoting the volume's position inside the filename ("filename.part1.rar").

Files like .r23 are just RAR/WinRAR archives in themselves, and as such can be opened and processed by any compatible archiver. To ensure successful data extraction from a split RAR/WinRAR archive, all its parts like .r23 must be present.
