Have a problem opening a .RAR file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what RAR files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .RAR file type?

RAR is an archive file format that allows compressing various sorts of files with the purpose of reducing their size. It's a proprietary format developed by Eugene Roshal, which is reflected by its name: Roshal's ARchive. RAR files are created with RAR and WinRAR that are file archivers developed by RarLab. As a freeware command-line program for unpacking RAR files along with its complete source code is available on the official site, many applications, both free and paid ones, can work with existing RAR archives (extract files).

RAR files support error recovery, which means that some additional information can be saved into RAR archives and used later to recover their contents in cases when the file is damaged. RAR and WinRAR can also create multi-volume archives, splitting the output RAR file into a number of smaller files according to the settings specified by the user.

A .rar file can contain files of any format, including documents, presentations, music, videos, further archives, etc.
