Opening txt files

Have a problem opening a .txt file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what txt files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .TXT file type?

The .txt file extension denotes simple text files and the TXT file type, accordingly. A TXT file is a computer file that contains only printable characters with special end-of-line (EOL) and, optionally, end-of-file (EOF) control characters.

TXT files contain no metadata, can have only simplest formatting and are normally encoded in ASCII, ANSI, or in Unicode. They are directly human-readable and conventionally referred to as 'plain text' files. The size of a .txt file is directly proportionate to the amount of text it contains (1 or 2 bytes per character) and can be zero for empty files.

TXT files can be displayed and edited on virtually any platform that supports text editing: PC's, tablets, smartphones, e-book readers, and other portable devices.

Besides text editors, .txt files can be easily processed by any kind of software and are very often used as ReadMe files, change logs, various system logs and journals, end-user licenses, etc.
