Have a problem opening a .Z03 file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what Z03 files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .Z03 file type?

Indexed filename extensions, like .z03 and similar, represent the Split ZIP Archive Volume (.z01–.z[nnn]) file type. One of the oldest and most well-known archive formats in the MS-DOS/Microsoft Windows world, ZIP supports split, or multi-volume archives, and such functionality is implemented in most ZIP-compatible archivers.

Split ZIP archive volumes are assigned indexed extensions, starting from .z01. So, the .z03 file is the third volume of a split ZIP archive. It contains a portion of the entire archive's data and is linked to its preceding and following neighbor volumes. Its numerical index defines the volume's position. The last volume gets the the standard .zip extension.

When a split ZIP volume, like .z03, is opened, other related volumes are accessed by the archiver automatically, provided that they are present in the same directory. Warnings are issued, if one or more other volumes are missing, as presence of all volumes is required for complete data retrieval. Since ZIP is one of the most widely supported archive formats, split ZIP archives (.z03, etc.) can be processed by many archivers on different platforms and OS'es.
