BAS File Extension

Have a problem opening a .BAS file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what BAS files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .BAS file type?

Derived from the word BASIC, the .bas filename extension has become a traditional way of representing Basic source code files. Basic (initially, BASIC, Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) is a simplified programming language developed in 1960's mainly for educational purposes and very popular in 1980's thanks to the advent of home computers. Many differing dialects of Basic exist or existed. A .bas file contains the source code of a Basic program. It is a normal text document listing a sequence of numbered statement and operator lines that can be directly run by a dialect-compatible Basic interpreter. Basic programs (.bas) can be written or edited in any text editor.

Apart from the traditional Basic, the .bas extension is also used for Visual Basic source code files, with Visual Basic a standalone event-driven programming language and a visual development environment from Microsoft. On a Microsoft Windows system, the .bas file type may be associated with a Basic/Visual Basic development environment, or an advanced text editor as a source code authoring tool.
