PSP File Extension

Have a problem opening a .PSP file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what PSP files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .PSP file type?

The .psp filename extension has its primary association with the PaintShop Pro Image (PSP) file format and type. Initially developed by JASC, PaintShop Pro is a paid Microsoft Windows bitmap/vector graphics editor by Corel. PaintShop Pro natively uses the PSP file format that allows to retain layers, their position and transparency, and generally preserve the state of a graphic project. There are several variants of the PSP format that correspond to PaintShop Pro versions.

A .psp file is a digital image file saved in PaintShop Pro's native file format (PSP). It is a compressed binary file with the plaintext "Paint Shop Pro Image File" signature in the file's header. Since PSP is Corel's private format, .psp image files can be generally opened with PaintShop Pro only, although several versions of the PSP format are supported by some other image editors (like GIMP) and can be limitedly converted into standard graphic formats.

Additionally, the .psp extension is associated with the Adobe Photoshop Preference File (.psp) file type/format. Different versions of the Adobe Photoshop image manipulation application use different names and locations for their preference (.psp) files. For instance, Adobe Photoshop CS6 for Microsoft Windows saves its general preferences in the file "Adobe Photoshop CS6 Prefs.psp" located in the "AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6\Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings" folder.

Besides general settings, PSP files also control user preferences for actions and editing tools. By removing individual .psp files, corresponding Adobe Photoshop preferences can be reset to their default values.

Besides, standing for 'Pushpin,' the .psp extension has an association with the Microsoft Streets and Trips Pushpin (PSP) file type and format. Microsoft Streets and Trips is a commercial consumer navigational and mapping software that uses .psp files to store map locations and descriptions of various points of interest (POI). Pushpin files (.psp) are used with reference to map files (.mps).

Apart from that, the .psp extension also comes around as an ID label for the PL/SQL Server Pages (PSP) file type. An extension of SQL, PL/SQL (Procedural Language/Structured Query Language) by Oracle is a programming language for data processing and web applications. Here, a .psp file is a text file that mixes HTML with PL/SQL code, with the latter providing all dynamic content generation capabilities. In order to be properly processed by the server, any PL/SQL server page must have the .psp extension.

Similarly, the .psp extension also stands for the Python Server Pages (PSP) file type used on Python-enabled web servers to denote server-side plaintext files that combine static HTML with dynamic Python inserts. Python is a powerful scripting language widely used in web, desktop, and mobile application programming.
