ADTS File Extension

Have a problem opening a .ADTS file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what ADTS files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .ADTS file type?

An abbreviation of "Audio Data Transport Stream" (ADTS), the .adts filename extension denotes the ADTS Audio File (.adts) file type and format. ADTS is a self-synchronizing container format used for streaming Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) audio content as MPEG-2 transport (MPEG-TS) or Shoutcast streams. ADTS data packets are encapsulated in standard Packetized Elementary Stream (PES, MPEG-2) or TCP (Shoutcast) frames.

The .adts file is a digital audio file, a raw AAC stream often obtained as a result of purposeful deconstruction of an MPEG container. ADTS files contain audio data only and can be opened by all multimedia software that support AAC. ADTS audio files are sometimes assigned the .aac extension, which is incorrect. The .adts file is an elementary AAC stream, while a regular .aac file is an Audio Data Interchange Format (ADIF) container.

In Microsoft Windows, the .adts file type is pre-associated with Windows Media Player (WMP), although newly installed media players may alter the default association.
