BPN File Extension

Have a problem opening a .BPN file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what BPN files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .BPN file type?

The .bpn filename extension stands for the ArchiCAD Project Backup (.bpn) file type associated with ArchiCAD, an industry-standard commercial arcitechtural design and BIM (Building Information Modeling) solution from GRAPHISOFT SE (Nemetschek Group). As a data safety measure to supplement the autosave feature, project backups can be automatically created in ArchiCAD.

A .bpn file is a backup copy of an ArchiCAD project. Automatic creation of .bpn backups is controlled by the Make Backup Copy option in the Data Safety tab of the Work Environment settings window. If it is active, a .bpn file will be created in the project's directory every time the project is saved by the user, retaining a snapshot of the previously saved state of the ArchiCAD project. In other words, the .bpn backup project is always one save behind the original .pln project. BPN project backups are different from the autosave files (usually, with the .T suffix) in that the .bpn backups use the same file format as regular ArchiCAD projects and can be directly opened in ArchiCAD for editing.
