EXR File Extension

Have a problem opening a .EXR file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what EXR files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .EXR file type?

The .exr filename extension belongs to the OpenEXR image format and represents the OpenEXR Image (.exr) file type. OpenEXR is an open high dynamic range (HDR) raster image format developed by Industrial Light & Magic (Lucasfilm Ltd.) and released under a BSD-like license.

OpenEXR images (.exr) store multiple exposition values for each pixel, save 'deep data' for complex compositing, and have a wider dynamic range than other bitmap formats. OpenEXR is currently used in professional movie-making, VR modeling, and HRDI (High Dynamic Range Imaging).

The .exr file is an OpenEXR image. Typically produced from rendering VR scenes or 3D models in various 3D-content authoring software, such images can use lossless (PIZ, ZIP, RLE) or lossy (PXR24, B44A) data compression and allow exposition correction in fixed steps ('stops'). One OpenEXR file (.exr) may contain multiple channels or related images that can be accessed individually. The most widely supported OpenEXR data mode is 16-bit floating-point, also referred to as the "half" mode. Such 16-bit OpenEXR images (.exr) can be opened in bitmap editors such as Adobe Photoshop.
