JAR File Extension

Have a problem opening a .JAR file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what JAR files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .JAR file type?

The JAR file format is based on the ZIP file format and works in the same way. It allows users to aggregate several files into a single archive package for efficient data storage and distribution. JAR files are used for deployment and encapsulation of libraries, applets or applications that can be executed by the Java Virtual Machine.

A runnable .jar file typically contains Java class files and auxiliary resource files containing such metadata as graphics or documents needed by the application. Additionally, there can be a manifest file specifying how to treat that particular .jar file. Packages labeled with the .jar file extension can be optionally sealed or digitally signed.

If you downloaded a .jar application that needs to be executed or a Java library stored in a .jar file, you can respectively use a copy of the Java Runtime Environment or download some decompression utility that can extract archive files. There are many software applications that can work with .jar files available online.
