JP2 File Extension

Have a problem opening a .JP2 file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what JP2 files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .JP2 file type?

The .jp2 extension belongs to the JPEG 2000 bitmap image format and the related JP2 file type. JPEG 2000 is an internationally standardized, royalty-free patented bitmap image format (ISO/IEC 15444-1:2004). Unlike the earlier JPEG-1 standard, JPEG 2000 uses a completely different data compression method (wavelet transform) that generally yields better image quality, fewer compression artifacts, and smaller file sizes. On the other hand, JPEG 2000 is computationally intensive and complex.

A .jp2 file is a JPEG 2000 bitmap image. JPEG 2000 supports progressive encoding, both lossy and lossless compression, alpha-channel transparency, and allows to achieve image scalability and store several image with different quality grades in one .jp2 file.

JPEG 2000 image files (.jp2) can incorporate XML and/or XMP metadata and are supported by quite a number of image editing, viewing, and conversion tools on all major OS'es. Support of the JPEG 2000 format by web browsers, however, remains narrow, and .jp2 images are not very popular on the Web. There are tools to convert .jp2 files into JPEG (.jpg) and other image formats.
