M4B File Extension

Have a problem opening a .M4B file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what M4B files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .M4B file type?

The .m4b extension is used with audio book files and podcasts. Although audio books in this format may also use the .mp4 and .m4a file extensions, M4B allows having some additional features that are essential for this type of audio. M4B features include: hyperlinks, images, markers for chapters, bookmarks (saving the listening position). Thus audio books with the .m4b file extension have certain advantages, compared to audio books in other formats.

M4B is not an independent format, it's just one of filename extensions for the well-known MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) format. As MP4 files may contain both audio and video tracks, some publishers started using different variants of filename extensions to indicate which sort of content is used in the particular file and to enable more flexible file type associations in Windows. The .m4b is one of such filename extensions for audio-only files.

M4B files typically contain audio compressed with the AAC codec, but other codecs (like Apple Lossless) may also be used.
