M4R File Extension

Have a problem opening a .M4R file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what M4R files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .M4R file type?

The .m4r extension is bound up with the MPEG-4 Ringtone (M4R) audio multimedia format and files written in that format. M4R is part of the MPEG standard and has been specifically developed for ringtones. It is the standard ringtone format for Apple iPhone.

M4R files are basically M4A files with the only difference that they cannot hold more than 30 seconds audio and must use the AAC audio compression codec. Due to their duration limit, .m4r files are relatively small.

M4A ringtone files can be easily created with Apple iTunes from any audio piece downloaded from the iTunes Store, however, the source must allow ringtone creation. There are many alternative ways to create DRM-free M4R ringtones, using alternative software. There are also a lot of format converters available to convert almost any audio format into M4R.

The default association for .m4r files in both Windows and MacOS would be iTunes (if installed). However, m4R files can be played with other media players.
