MOBI File Extension

Have a problem opening a .MOBI file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what MOBI files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .MOBI file type?

The MOBI file format is used for eBook distribution on portable devices - smartphones, communicators, palmtop computers and Amazon’s Kindle readers. It represents an implementation of the Open eBook Publication format based on standard HTML.

The MOBI format was created by French company MobiPocket for their MobiPocket Reader application. In 2005, MobiPocket was bought by Amazon, the leading American digital publisher. That’s why this eBook format is now mainly used and supported by Amazon and their online store.

The files with the .mobi extension can include complex content and support such elements as illustrations, drawings, cover pages, annotations, bookmarks, advanced navigation, corrections, notes, and so on. The file header typically includes the book’s title and the author’s name.

The eBooks in the .mobi format may optionally include DRM copyright protection features to prevent illegal activities and to protect authors and publishers from pirating and copyright infringement.
