Opening MP3 files

Have a problem opening a .MP3 file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what MP3 files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .MP3 file type?

MP3 is a popular format for storing and streaming digital music and audio. It is part of MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 standards created by the Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) and can be referred to as MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 or MPEG-2 Audio Layer 3. MP3 is a lossy format, which means that some quality is lost when one converts audio into this format. While this may be considered as unwanted behavior, experts claim that most people cannot recognize any losses because of the fact that the lost parts of sound are beyond the area recognized by the human ear (this method of discarding portions of audio information is also known as perceptual coding).

MP3 supports a wide variety of bitrate and frequency settings, which allows choosing between high-quality bigger files (great for music) and lower quality compact files (suitable for audio books and many other purposes).

MP3 is supported by virtually every software and hardware player, including DVD players, HD video players, mobile phones, etc.
