Standing for 'MPEG Audio,' the .mpga filename extension is another way to denote the MPEG-1 Layer III (MP3) audio file format. MPEG-1 Layer III is by far the most popular and well-supported lossy audio compression format, targeting consumer music scene. The standard extension for MP3 files is .mp3.
An .mpga file is a compressed digital audio file. While it may seem to have its own format, it is basically a true MPEG-1 Layer III (MP3) file with a different extension. Some media players recognize the .mpga file type and treat such files properly as MP3, while others may require changing the extension to the standard .mp3.
Using the .mpga extension is a non-standard way of denoting MP3 files and should generally be avoided. One particular case when the .mpga extension is extensively used relates to the Android OS on which it is auto-assigned to any downloaded MP3 file.
MPGA audio files do not require any conversion and can be directly played, edited, and otherwise manipulated by any multimedia software that supports MP3. Playback of .mpga files on hardware players may still require changing the extension to .mp3.
