MSDVD File Extension

Have a problem opening a .MSDVD file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what MSDVD files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .MSDVD file type?

The .msdvd extension goes with the Microsoft Windows DVD Maker Project (MSDVD) file type. Windows DVD Maker is a simple DVD-authoring tool bundled with several Microsoft Windows operating systems, starting from Windows Vista (Home Premium and Ultimate editions), to help users create simple DVD presentations, slide shows, and movies.

An .msdvd file is a small text-based XML file that represents a Windows DVD Maker project and holds references to all media items included in it, as well as any project settings and/or effects applied.

A common mistake is attempting to "play" an .msdvd project file, burn it directly into a DVD, or convert it with whatever converters. The .msdvd file is only a project file that binds together different video clips, photos, etc. and does not contain any actual multimedia data. A DVD project prepared with Windows DVD Maker has to be first produced from within the application, i.e. burned on a DVD disk or exported into a video file (e.g., .wmv).

The MSDVD file type is automatically registered and associated with Windows DVD Maker, so any .msdvd project can be opened with the default open action (double-click).
