PKF File Extension

Have a problem opening a .PKF file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what PKF files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .PKF file type?

The .pkf extension is bound up with the proprietary 'Audition Peak File' (PKF) format and is used to distinguish waveform peak files created and used by Adobe Audition, an advanced commercial audio editing tool by Adobe Systems, Inc.

By their function, PKF files is similar to PK files as both store waveform peak data for associated waveform audio files (WAV). The difference is that PKF uses the floating-point number format. Peak data are saved as PKF files by default in later Audition versions.

PKF files are encrypted binary files containing waveform peak data used for building visual representations of the actual sound wave data in a WAV file. A PKF file would be created every time a new WAV is added or used within Audition to speed up visual rendering of a waveform. PKF peak files do not contain any audio data but just hold references to it.

PKF files are not meant to be opened directly and are safe to delete.

Alternatively, the .pkf extension can be associated with the 'SecretAgent Key File' format and used in SecretAgent key files. SecretAgent is a commercial multi-platform security encryption utility. A SecretAgent PKF key file is a unique sequence of information bytes used as a mask for an encryption/decryption algorithm.
