PVA File Extension

Have a problem opening a .PVA file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what PVA files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .PVA file type?

The .pva filename extension most frequently occurs standing for the PVA File and Stream Format and the associated PVA Multimedia File (.pva) file type. PVA is a non-standard digital multimedia container format developed by TechnoTrend for their DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting) PCI cards.

Although not directly compatible with the MPEG-2 Transport Stream (MPEG-2 TS) specification, the PVA format relies on the same standard MPEG-2 Packetized Elementary Streams (PES) and, therefore, allows conversion into MPEG-2 (.mpg). Technically, PVA follows the internal data format of the TM S320AV7110 MPEG-2 audio/video decoder chip's input buffer, while the chip itself is included in many consumer DVB boards.

A .pva file is a digital multimedia file in the PVA format. Most commonly, it is a recording of a DVB program made on a PC with a DVB PCI card. PVA video files cannot be directly played by most media players and require conversion. There are several utilities that support both recording of DVB content in the .pva format and playback/transcoding of .pva files.

In industry, the .pva extension stands for PanelView Application (PVA) and is used as a label for program data files (.pva) created with the legacy PanelBuilder32 terminal configuration software (a Microsoft Windows application by Allen Bradley/Rockwell Automation). A .pva file is a PanelView terminal screen interface, converted from the PanelBuilder32 native format (.pba) into a special binary format understood by the terminal's firmware. PVA files are uploaded onto PanelView industrial terminals, using the WinPFT File Transfer Utility.
