R91 File Extension

Have a problem opening a .R91 file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what R91 files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .R91 file type?

Indexed filename extensions like .r91 are used to denote volumes of multi-part RAR archives. RAR is a proprietary data compression algorithm invented by E.Roshal and implemented by him into a CLI tool, RAR (rar). Its Microsoft Windows GUI version, WinRAR, has developed into a popular all-purpose archive manager. Both RAR and WinRAR can create and process multi-part archives.

A multi-part RAR archive consists of several parts (volumes) of the same size, each volume uniquely identified with an indexed extension, like .r91. The numerical index points out to a volume's position within the archive. Using such extensions (.r00.r99) matches the older convention, while the newer approach (default in many archivers) calls for dual extensions, like .part91.rar.

The .r91 file itself is the ninety-third volume of a presumably large multi-part RAR archive (the first part always receives the standard .rar or .exe extension). Files like .r91 are recognized and can be processed by RAR/WinRAR and all RAR-compatible archives. For successful extraction of data from such a multi-volume archive, all its parts (.r91 and prior) must be available.
