SVGZ File Extension

Have a problem opening a .SVGZ file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what SVGZ files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .SVGZ file type?

The .svgz extension denotes the Compressed Scalable Vector Graphics (SVGZ) file type and format. Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is an XML-based markup language to describe vector graphics through elementary shapes, primitives, objects, etc. SVG supports overlay, transparency (alpha-channel), and interactivity.

An W3C open standard, SVG is easily embeddable into (X)HTML pages and compatible with CSS. When used within a web page, SVG is integrated into the Document Object Model (DOM) and can be used to create complex interactive animations through scripts. An SVG document is a text file with the description of vector graphical elements, to be rendered by an SVG-compatible application.

SVGZ is an open compressed format that uses gzip compression to reduce the size of SVG documents, which can grow significantly with complex graphics. An .svgz file is a compressed gzip archive, with a plaintext SVG document inside.

Both SVG and SVGZ vector images can be directly viewed and/or interacted with in most web browsers (or with a browser plugin); they are supported by a number of office suites, vector image editors, viewers and others.
