UT File Extension

Have a problem opening a .UT file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what UT files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .UT file type?

The ".ut" string is a misrepresentation of the .!ut extension associated with the uTorrent Incomplete Download (.!ut) file type. uTorrent is a lightweight freeware/commercial BitTorrent client for MS Windows/Mac OS to connect to BitTorrent peer-to-peer (P2P) distributed networks. BitTorrent P2P networks are serverless and use servers (torrent trackers) only to host torrent (.torrent) hash files. uTorrent is one of the most popular BitTorrent clients.

uTorrent uses the .!ut extension to mark those files that have not been completely downloaded. This behavior is controlled by the "Append .!ut to incomplete files" option in the uTorrent settings.

Unlike .torrent files, which simply contain hash data, .!ut files are in fact data files that are currently being downloaded. All .!ut files are located in the current download directory specified in the uTorrent settings. The temporary .!ut extension is automatically removed, once the file is completely transferred and its integrity verified.

Normally, the user is not supposed to manipulate any .!ut files directly. Instead, one can resume/re-start the download from the Torrents panel in uTorrent.
