WM File Extension

Have a problem opening a .WM file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what WM files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .WM file type?

The primary association of the .wm filename extension belongs to the Windows Media Multimedia File (.wm) file type/format. Windows Media (WM) is a proprietary multimedia framework technology developed by Microsoft for their Windows operating systems, currently superseded by Microsoft Media Foundation. Windows Media files rely on the standard ASF container format.

A .wm file is a Windows Media container (ASF) file with video and/or audio streams encoded with WM-compatible codecs. The .wm extension can be considered an equivalent to .wmv. In addition to .wm, Windows Media files use several other extensions: .wmv (Windows Media Video), .wma (Windows Media Audio), and .asf (generic ASF container).

On Microsoft Windows, all WM (.wm, .wma, .wmv, .asf) extensions are pre-associated with the Windows Media Player (WMP). Besides WMP, WM files can be played back with a number of other media players on different platforms and OS'es.

Besides, the .wm extension was also used in association with the Working Model 2D (WM2D) Model File (.wm) file type/format, with reference to Working Model 2D, a proprietary software by Design Simulation Technologies to simulate various dynamic models in physics and engineering. A .wm file is a binary data file representing a WM2D model, recognizable by the "FzzX" signature at the file's header. Such .wm files can be opened with Working Model 2D only.

To avoid conflict with the Windows Media file type, later WM2D releases switched to using the .wm2d extension instead of .wm.
