XVID File Extension

Have a problem opening a .XVID file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what XVID files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .XVID file type?

Xvid (formerly, XviD)—a reversed DivX—is an open and free (GNU GPL) video compression codec. When used as a filename extension, .xvid denotes the generic Xvid (MPEG-4) Compressed Video file type/format. Xvid is an independent implementation of the MPEG-4 Advanced Simple Profile (ASP) video compression method, available as a codec library for multiple platforms.

A proper .xvid file contains a single MPEG-4 digital video track compressed with the Xvid codec. However, as Xvid video tracks are most commonly encountered inside AVI (Audio-Video Interleaved) container files, the .xvid extension is often improperly assigned to such AVI containers. AVI containers should have the .avi extension regardless of the video codec used.

Even with the .xvid extension, Xvid-based AVI files can be played with the majority of hardware/software media players that support MPEG-4 and DivX, with many supporting Xvid playback natively. Still, it may be required to change the .xvid extension to .avi.

Also, the ".xvid" (or ".xvid") string can be used in filenames of AVI or other video files to indicate the encoder (Xvid) and the compression method used.
