YML File Extension

Have a problem opening a .YML file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what YML files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .YML file type?

Associated with the YAML Data File (.yml or .yaml) file type, the .yml extension is conventionally used to denote text-based YAML files. YAML—originally standing for 'Yet Another Markup Language,' but later transmuting into the recursive 'YAML Ain't Markup Language'—is positioned by its authors as a human-readable, extensible, universal, consistent, and agile data serialization language, with the main focus shifted from the markup to the data.

YAML is currently integrated into all actively used programming and scripting languages (C/C++, PHP, Ruby on Rails, Python, etc.). YML files are broadly used as data and/or configuration files in a number of web applications. For instance, .yml files are routinely used for configuring Minecraft game servers.

An .yml file is a simple text file that contains one or more text lines written in the YAML syntax. Perfectly readable and parsable by machines, any .yml file can be opened with a text editor and easily read by a human. Besides .yml, YAML files are also denoted with the officially preferred .yaml extension.
