What is the .SOL file type?

The .sol extension has its primary association with the Adobe Flash Local Shared Objects (SOL) file format and the related .sol file type. Adobe (formerly, Macromedia) Flash is a hugely popular multimedia content-serving and authoring technology based upon streaming over TCP/IP networks (the Internet). Flash content is playable via browser plug-in modules (e.g., Adobe Flash Player).

Similar to cookie files used by web browsers, SOL files are created and used by Flash plugins to store any persistent data on a local machine, and often referred to as 'Flash cookies.'

In particular, local shared objects are very often used in Flash-based online games to save game settings and current progress as .sol files, which can be edited to alter the current status or behavior of the game. SOL files in general are openable and editable with several dedicated editor tools.

Apart from that, the .sol extension also denotes the SWAT Soil Input Data (.sol) file type used with SWAT (Soil & Water Assessment Tool), a Texas-based public-domain research and data-analysis project. A SWAT input file (.sol) is a text-based file with soil properties data.

Besides, the .sol extension—as a short for 'Solution'—is often used to identify various mathematical, hydrodynamic and other solution files created/used by different scientific and applied-research tools (e.g., RMA2, GENESIS, SMS, etc.). Such .sol files are mainly text-based, and use a variety of syntax rules and data types.

Finally, the .sol extension also serves to label data files used by the SolarTool utility within the Autodesk Ecotect Analysis package. Autodesk Ecotect Analysis is a dedicated CAD application to design and visualize renewable-energy (PV, solar) installations.
