M4V File Extension

Have a problem opening a .M4V file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what M4V files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .M4V file type?

The .m4v extension associates with the proprietary M4V format developed by Apple. M4V is based upon the Movie Pictures Experts Group 4 (MPEG-4) format with the addition of Digital Rights Management (DRM) capability and AC3 audio compression support. Like many popular video formats, M4V is a container format that holds several interleaved audio and video streams in one file.

M4V files are often video files purchased and/or downloaded from the iTunes Store, some of them copy-protected with the Apple's FairPlay DRM technology. DRM-protected M4V files can be played with Apple iTunes upon authorization against a user account. Unprotected M4V video files are playable with most media players that support MPEG-4 on all desktop platforms.

Although different, the .m4v file type enjoys almost the same level of support as .mp4.

In Windows 7 and newer, the .m4v extension is linked up with Windows Media Player (WMP) by default if iTunes is not installed. In MacOS, the default association would be iTunes.
