What is the .HP2 file type?

Among several other extensions, the .hp2 filename extension represents the HPGL Plot File file type. HPGL stands for Hewlett-Packard Graphic Language and refers to a vector graphics language and interface implementation developed by Hewlett-Packard (HP) for their plotter devices. The second version of HPGL, usually referred to as HPGL/2, introduced several major advancements and became a de facto standard for plotters.

HPGL/2 files can have several extensions, including .plt ("plotter"), .hp1, .hp2, .hp3, .hpg, .hpgl, and a number of others. An HPGL/2 file contains a series of plotter-control instructions that, if followed, result in the required image being drawn. Thus, an .hp2 file is an HPGL/2 plot file. Often an actual CAD drawing, it can be sent directly to a compatible HP plotter or printer for actual plotting/printing on paper or other surfaces.

HPGL/2 is typically supported by many CAD systems as one of the output/export formats. There are many tools, freeware and commercial, to handle HPGL/2 files, including saving, converting, and importing into CAD applications.
