PHY File Extension

Have a problem opening a .PHY file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what PHY files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .PHY file type?

The PHY file extension is primarily attributed to physique files created with the help of Autodesk 3ds Max (formerly 3D Studio Max) application produced by Autodesk Media and Entertainment. You can use the controls on the Physique rollout to save and load .phy files in the program.

In 3ds Max, Physique is a modifier that helps to apply a 3D mesh “skin” to a biped or similar skeletal structure. When the biped is animated, the Physique modifier deforms the skin in such a way that it matches the skeleton's movement.

A file with the .phy extension is used to store information on the physique parameters of the mesh set up with the Physique modifier – its vertex, envelope, and so on. The same set of parameters can be applied to multiple objects.

In addition, a .phy file can be created by PhyMod, a music software application designed to produce electronic sounds by simulating virtual resonance bodies. These "sound-sculptures" as well as their parameters are saved as data files with the .phy extension.
