Opening QT files

Have a problem opening a .QT file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what QT files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .QT file type?

An acronym for QuickTime, the .qt filename extension represents the QuickTime Movie (.qt, .mov) file type. QuickTime is the name of a proprietary multimedia software framework developed by Apple. QuickTime uses its own QuickTime File Format (QTFF), a container format based on using data atoms with support for multiple audio, video, and subtitle tracks, and advanced editing capabilities. QTFF predates the internationally standardized MPEG-4 and was used as the base for it. For developers, Apple has published the complete QTFF specification.

The .qt file is a QuickTime movie, a video file in the QTFF format, more commonly designated with the .mov ('movie') extension. For all practical purposes, the .mov and .qt extensions are interchangeable. Such files (.mov, .qt) can be opened and played with Apple's official QuickTime software. When installed, it creates and maintains a set of file type associations for itself, including .mov and .qt. Besides QuickTime, .mov/.qt movies can be played and/or edited with a large number of both paid and free multimedia tools.
