Opening SR2 files

Have a problem opening a .SR2 file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what SR2 files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .SR2 file type?

The .sr2 filename extension, like the other two extensions .srf and .arw, represents the Sony RAW Image (.sr2, .srf, .arw) file format family used by Sony digital cameras. Specifically, the .sr2 extension denotes the RAW format subversion used by such cameras as Sony Cyber-shot DSC R-1.

The .sr2 file is a photographic picture saved in Sony's RAW format. It contains unprocessed pixel color data that requires post-processing, or developing. Such files (.sr2) can be viewed, processed, or converted using Sony's proprietary Image Data Converter or other software, provided that a RAW compatibility package (e.g., Sony RAW Driver or the Microsoft Camera Codec Pack) is installed on the system. Several image viewers provide their own support for most RAW formats, including SR2.

Through camera RAW plugins, Sony RAW images (.sr2 and others) can be directly imported or worked with in several graphics editors and digital photography software. There are also utilities that can convert Sony RAW images (.sr2, .srf, .arw) into standard digital negatives (DNG) or common bitmap formats, like JPEG.
