SRF File Extension

Have a problem opening a .SRF file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what SRF files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .SRF file type?

The .srf filename extension is chiefly associated with the Sony Raw Image (SRF) file format and type. One of the leading producers of consumer electronics and photography appliances, Sony has introduced its own proprietary SRF format for storing raw photographic images obtained with still-image cameras. Like other makers' raw formats, SRF handles unprocessed data received directly from a camera's CMOS (CCD) matrix.

An .srf file is a picture shot by a high-end Sony camera and saved in the SRF format. It is a 'digital negative' that requires 'developing,' i.e. processing by image-manipulation software. An .srf picture retains maximum image data, and SRF files are usually kept as high-quality master copies, to be further edited, retouched, or otherwise processed and published as JPEG or PNG.

Besides Sony's proprietary software, SRF raw images are supported by several image manipulation programs and multi-format image viewers.

Besides, the .srf extension also serves to denote vehicle image files in Garmin portable GPS navigation devices, such as Garmin nüvi. An .srf file represents a 3D image of a vehicle displayed on a GPS device's screen during navigation. Technically, it is a set of 36 bitmap projection images packaged into a single file in a proprietary Garmin's format.

SRF vehicle images can be used with compatible Garmin GPS devices. Garmin offers a large selection of free SRF images though its Garmin Garage online service. There are also unofficial tools to convert .srf files to PNG, and back.

Additionally, the .srf extension stands for the Surfer Project (SRF) file type and format. Surfer by Golden Software is a commercial 3D surface mapping and contouring tool (Microsoft Windows) that uses .srf files to save its projects. An .srf file is a Surfer project that stores all data, necessary to build and visualize a complex (often, multi-layered) Surfer map. Such SRF files are intended to be opened in Surfer only.

In the context of LightWave 3D, an advanced and powerful 3D modeling tool by NewTek, the .srf extension is used in association with the LightWave 3D Surface (SRF) file type and format. An .srf surface file defines attributes of a 3D surface (color, texture) that can be applied to objects within a scene designed in LightWave 3D. Beside surfaces (.srf), surface presets (.pst) are also used in LightWave 3D.

With reference to Oracle Siebel CRM, a large and the most known Client-Relationship Management (CRM) software system by Oracle (formerly, Siebel), the .srf extension stands for the Siebel Repository File (SRF) file type and format. Here, an .srf file is a compiled representation of a Siebel object repository. SRF files must be re-compiled with every database upgrade. Inaccessible to users, such .srf files are intended to be handled by Siebel administrators.

Another association of the .srf extension has to do with the Server Response File (SRF) file type related to Microsoft's ATL Server web application technology. ATL Server is a C++ based server-side dynamic content generation platform that was part of Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 but later discontinued. Within ATL Server, an .srf file is a regular text-based HTML file with ATL Server code inserts.

Certain Samsung TV units with the built-in PVR (Personal Video Recorder) function use the .srf extension to label their media recordings. An .srf file is an MPEG 2-TS (Transport Stream) container, possibly with DRM protection. Such SRF media files can generally be played back on the same device that recorded them.

Lastly, the .srf extension also occurs while denoting binary data files with reference to InfoCrafter, a document processing tool integrated into the IBM AIX 6.1 operating system. A .srf file contains a document's textual data complemented with hypertext links. SRF files are intermediary system files.
