Opening WP files

Have a problem opening a .WP file? We collect information about file formats and can explain what WP files are. Additionally we recommend software suitable for opening or converting such files.

What is the .WP file type?

Primarily, the .wp extension is associated with the legacy 'WordPerfect Document' (WP) file type and format used with earlier versions of WordPerfect. WordPerfect is a well-known word-processing application and part of the WordPerfect Office suite, commercially available for MS Windows from Corel Corporation. Similar to other office productivity solutions, WordPerfect offers a package of office-oriented document processing tools.

A .wp file is a binary document file created and saved with an earlier version of WordPerfect. Such a WP file is a word-processing document that can contain rich text, tables, diagrams etc. and is meant to be opened in WordPerfect. All recent versions of WordPerfect use a different upgraded file format (.wpd), but legacy .wp files can still be opened. Besides WordPerfect, several other office suites support import of .wp (and .wpd) files.

If installed, WordPerfect creates associations for both .wp and .wpd file types, besides others.

Alternatively, the .wp extension is also used to denote plaintext XCSV-like files that are used to store GPS waypoint data. Such .wp files are used by DAV (Deutscher Alpenverein - German Alps Association), Kompass and other GPS navigation systems, especially in connection with hiking and trekking.
